Should the LA Clippers consider reuniting with Moe Harkless?
Coming off a great off-season, the LA Clippers are close to perfect on both ends of the floor. With one of the best head coaches in basketball and the deepest roster in the NBA, the LA Clippers have the best chances of winning their first-ever championship.
In addition, head coach Tyronn Lue has several wings to utilize in his rotation. Paring superstars Kawhi Leonard and Paul George with the talents of Nicolas Batum, Terance Mann, Robert Covington, and many more will be a nightmare for opposing teams. Throughout the NBA, opponents will have to game-plan weeks ahead of their match-up with the Clippers to stand a chance.
Moreover, a solid wing has entered his name into the free agent market. The former Clipper, Maurice Harkless, was recently waived by the Houston Rockets and is now a free agent. Although he may receive interest from several teams across the league, the best fit for him is the LA Clippers.
Not only does he have experience playing for the organization, but he also brings a locker-room presence that could help the LA Clippers long-term. In addition, Lue and his squad have a lot to offer for a player like Harkless. He would be able to play alongside the best duo in the NBA and a championship-caliber head coach. Furthermore, the addition of Harkless would work for both parties.
Signing Maurice Harkless would be another quality addition to the LA Clippers.
Making a move on a player like Maurice Harkless would be a phenomenal signing for the LA Clippers. Since entering the league, Harkless has played for six different NBA teams. The LA Clippers could use this level of veteran experience toward the season’s end.
Additionally, it would not cost the LA Clippers much to sign Harkless. At this point in his career, a contract with the Clippers would likely be a one-year veteran minimum deal. Suppose he excels in his role throughout the regular season. In that case, the front office could look into further negotiations next season. As of right now, this signing would be beneficial for both sides.
During his time with the LA Clippers (2019-20), Harkless averaged 5.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 1.0 steals while shooting 51.6% from the field and 37.0% from the three. If he returned to the franchise, his role would be reasonably simple off the bench. However, when the Clippers need a stop down the stretch, Harkless would come in due to his defensive attributes.
Harkless’ size and length allow him to dominate on the defensive side of the ball. Having another solid wing off the bench would guarantee the Clippers a top seed in the Western Conference, assuming the roster remains healthy. Lue and the front office should pursue the addition of Harkless, as he would play a vital role in the race to a title for the LA Clippers.
