Clippers rumors: LA eyeing Malcolm Brogdon
The LA Clippers season was primarily held together last year with duck tape, glue, and the heroics of Reggie Jackson. With Kawhi Leonard forced to root on his Clipper teammates from the bench as he nursed a torn ACL, and with Paul George missing 51 games with torn ligaments in his right elbow, Jackson placed LA on his broad shoulders and carried them to 42 victories.
The immensely talented guard finished his third season donning a Clippers uniform with averages of 16.8 points and 4.8 assists. But while LA expressed nightly confidence in his ability, quietly, they could be looking to upgrade the position during the offseason.
The Indiana Pacers, fresh off another disappointing year that resulted in just 25 wins, are reportedly looking to shed several deleterious contracts. Amongst them, is the expiring yet hefty deal of point guard Malcolm Brogdon.
As first reported by ESPN’s Zach Lowe, LA has inquired about the services of the oft-injured former Rookie of the Year.
“I had heard yesterday that the Clippers, they kicked around Malcolm Brogdon,” said Lowe. “That made a lot of sense to me. And then I subsequently heard that they’re … of course, every team kicks around lots of stuff.”
Brogdon, 29, has repeatedly proven his worth to talent evaluators. After becoming the first player in NBA history to win Rookie of the Year as a second-round draft pick, Brogdon has gone on to have a lasting impact in Indiana.
This past season, Brogdon wrapped up his sixth season in the NBA with averages of 19.1 points and 5.9 assists.
Brogdon’s injury history could scare Clippers away
While Brogdon has shown to be efficient, nailing 51.8% of his 2-point attempts this past year, his career has been mired in perpetual injuries. Outside of his first season in the NBA, on average, Brogdon has missed approximately 30 games per year. Continuing his injury trend, Brogdon was forced to the sidelines for a total of 46 games this past season, as he dealt with a bevy of ailments.
Although the need to bolster a championship-laden roster has become ostensible, Lowe is of the belief that Brogdon is unlikely to suit up next to Kawhi Leonard and Paul George next year. Lowe’s proclamation doesn’t stem from LA’s loyalty to Jackson though, but rather, Malcolm’s penchant for protracted stints on the mend.
“I don’t think Malcolm Brogdon’s going to the Clippers,” continued Lowe. “Brogdon fits anywhere, but he’s also injured all the time.”
