The power, speed, and tenacity was all ostensibly there. But Chris Wilcox simply couldn’t put it all together.

Anxious for a true low post presence that could bring it every night, the LA Clippers grabbed Chris Wilcox with the eighth overall pick in the 2002 NBA Draft. Much was expected of Wilcox but very little was actually received.

His ability to demand the ball down low and dominate on the collegiate level never materialized in the NBA. Still, while he only averaged 3.7 points and 2.3 rebounds as a rookie, at the age of 20, LA refused to give up on him.

Wilcox, to his credit, began improving. In his second season, he averaged 8.6 points and 4.3 rebounds. Ultimately, however, despite his minuscule growth, LA was unwilling to foster his development, trading him during his fourth year to Seattle.

Surprisingly, Wilcox averaged double digits points for three consecutive seasons. He was very much an energy player, one who got his points due to his aggressive rebounding, especially on the offensive glass.

Wilcox was a respectable NBA player but he was never worthy of being selected with the eighth overall pick.
