LA Clippers Head Coach Ty Lue has quickly become known as one of the very best coaches in the NBA.
One of the loudest talking heads for the game in Max Kellerman (ESPN) even said on-air that Lue is the best coach in the entire league.
Recently, NBA GMs were surveyed on a variety of topics, and they were asked about coaches quite a bit. While Lue was not listed as a top five coach in this league, there were other areas where Lue was highly-ranked.
Not surprising to LA Clippers fans, Ty Lue was named the best coach in the NBA at making in-game adjustments.
LA Clippers’ Head Coach Ty Lue received 37% of that vote, which is 10% more than the next-best coach in Rick Carlisle. Erik Spoelstra won the title last year, and he came in third this year with just 10% of the vote.
If Lue is beating Carlisle and Spoelstra in this incredibly important category, it’s a great sign.
Lue also was tied for second in the category for which coach is the “best manager/motivator of people.” Monty Williams dominated that award with 50% of the vote, but he’s the only coach who got more of the vote than Lue, who received 10% of the votes.
There were also categories for who has the best offense and who has the best defensive schemes, and Lue didn’t have the greatest showing. He received some votes for the defensive title but none for offense.
I disagree with him not doing well on those two lists. Lue outsmarted his competition with the small lineups he utilized in the postseason when he was down key players. He had to pioneer lineups that would work with the lack of size he had available to him, and he really succeeded.
He did unconventional things to create successful schemes and developed a lot of guys on the offensive side of the ball.
It’s similar, however, to the situation with him not being listed as a top five coach in this game. It’s not correct, but it’s also good to see the areas where he really did shine on this list.
After all, Lue is very young, and has only coached our team for just one year. Every other coach on the list is much older, and Lue will surely be on that top five list next year.
Clippers fans are lucky to have Lue on our team, and he’s going to lead this squad to an overachieving season this year.
