No. 1 best new home for Serge Ibaka if he leaves the LA Clippers this offseason: The San Antonio Spurs
The San Antonio Spurs could use Serge Ibaka if he’s going to opt out of his deal with the LA Clippers.
The Spurs aren’t trending in the right direction, but any team coached by Coach Popovich is going to be of intrigue to free agents. I think Ibaka could be a Popovich guy for sure.
Pop has a history of liking bigs who have sound fundamentals and are well-rounded.
Ibaka provides guaranteed stops if teams try to drive the paint on him, can still rebound, and still shot almost 34% this year from three as a five.
Pop also didn’t have much production from his centers this year outside of Jakob Poeltl. Poeltl is still young, and was a solid rebounder and is a good shot-blocker.
He could take his game to the next level if Ibaka steps in and can be a mentor for him. Ibaka and Poeltl would be a great tandem of centers in San Antonio, which is something the Spurs didn’t have last year.
Ibaka is best to give it another shot in LA, but there are valid reasons as to why he may entertain leaving. If he chooses to, these teams would be a good fit for both sides.
