LA Clippers: 3 ways Patrick Beverley’s return will help
LA Clippers: Patrick Beverley’s Benefits #3 – More Rolls of the Bench Dice
When the LA Clippers go to the bench, especially for guards, it’s resembled a roll of the dice. When the starting lineup is intact, there are several good results for the dice to land on. Sometimes the dice will come up “Reggie and Luke” and those two will have good games.
Sometimes it’s just Rondo, or just Mann or just Reggie. The starters are good enough that they really only need one of their bench guards to have a good game to give the Clippers a good chance to win. The problem is, with Beverley out, there are fewer possible outcomes of that roll.
Reggie has been taken out of the “which bench guard will have a good game” pool, and now we’re relying on Luke, Rondo or Mann to come up big. That can happen, but not as frequently. We’ve had some games where those dice came up blank, and the bench just didn’t have it going.
When Bev comes back, Reggie Jackson heads back to the bench and can be the guy who steps up and has a good enough game as a backup to push the Clips to a win.
Jackson has had a solid run as a starter filling in for Bev, but his best role is as a backup for us. Patrick Beverley’s return will be great for the Clippers for many reason, but one of them is that Reggie can go back to the spot in the rotation from which he’s best contributed to the team.
When Bev comes back, he’s going to contribute on the stat sheet, he’s going to contribute to the team’s energy and he’s going to give us a better chance for the bench to contribute in the playoffs. Clipper Nation will be happy to have him back.
