LA Clippers Big Question #2: What Guards See Time in the Playoffs?

The center position isn’t the only uncertain rotation as the LA Clippers approach the playoffs. The Clips have 5 guards that could reasonably play minutes in the playoffs, but there certainly aren’t 5 spots open.

At its largest, the rotation might be nine deep. If that’s the case, two out of Luke Kennard, Reggie Jackson, Patrick Beverley, Rajon Rondo and Terance Mann are left out. A more realistic eight man rotation will leave out three of them.

If you’re only picking two out of those five guards to play, whom are you picking? On top of that, it’s exceedingly hard to justify leaving Pat Bev out of the rotation if he’s healthy, so you’re really looking at picking one out of the remaining four.

Each of them has an argument. Rondo has the most experience in meaningful games, and “Playoff Rondo” is a real occurrence. Kennard can catch on fire, and he’s the best shooter out of them all. Reggie’s got the most experience playing with the guys, and Terance Mann gives a dimension to the offense that nobody else really does.

That said, none of them are perfect options, so Lue’s got his work cut out for him making this choice. It’s possible that we’ll see little situational adjustments, but I wouldn’t expect huge changes to the rotations, especially in the middle of a series.

“Who gets minutes?” is a decision that will be made based on how Lue sees each guy’s skillset fitting with the rest of the playoffs rotation. I’m just glad it’s somebody else making that decision, and not me, because it seems like there are going to be multiple very tough cuts to be made.
