Buy or Sell? The LA Clippers Need a Point Guard

Stop me if you’ve heard this one: “The LA Clippers can’t go far into the playoffs if they don’t make a trade for a real playmaker.” We’ve all seen this going around the Clippers’ circles of the internet.

The names change, but the sentiment doesn’t. We’ve seen Kyle Lowry tossed around. We’ve also seen Ricky Rubio, Eric Bledsoe, Russell Westbrook, George Hill. The list goes on and on. There’s often not much thought put into how to get these players. The point is we NEED them.

The number one issue that’s being ignored here is, again, that the LA Clippers can’t really make a trade for a big point guard. Unless you want to move Kawhi Leonard, Paul George or Patrick Beverley, the money to match a big contract just isn’t there.

Beyond that, though, the need for a point guard just isn’t there like the internet wants it to be. One of the things we loved most from the first half of the season was point Paul George. As the ball handler for some of the most common plays, Paul George is in the top 15% of scorers leaguewide.

The fact of the matter is, the LA Clippers just aren’t going to move Mfiondu Kabengele and Luke Kennard and get a point guard who runs the offense anywhere near as well as Paul George does. With that in mind, what do the Clips need in a point guard?

They need somebody who can play defense on opposing guards and hit open shots, all while being a tertiary distributor. And Patrick Beverley fits the mold all too well! There isn’t an upgrade out there on Bev, and if you move somebody like Lou Williams, you’re not getting anything close to value back.

The LA Clippers don’t need a point guard and they can’t get one anyway. For that reason, we are SELLING on this concern.
