LA Clippers: Patrick Beverley Season Preview and Outlook
LA Clippers: Patrick Beverley Preview – Things to Do Differently:
There are a few changes that Patrick Beverley needs to make to his game if he wants to contribute to the LA Clippers at the highest level.
We talked about how his defense is one of his best traits that needs to continue into the new year. And that’s absolutely true! But he needs to make some changes there.
Bev played 26 minutes per game last year, fewest since his first year in the NBA. Some of that was due to injuries, but some was due to foul trouble. This was very visible throughout the playoffs – for example, in Game 6 against Denver, when he fouled out after just 18 minutes of play. As a whole, he averaged 4 fouls a game last year.
Beverley’s defense relies on physicality, but it doesn’t matter how destructive of a defender he is if he can’t stay on the court. I’m hoping to see Pat dial it back just a touch, in an effort to foul less, especially in big games. I don’t want to see him take away what makes Bev who he is, but I’d rather 32 minutes of Beverley at 90% than 20 minutes of Beverley at 100%.
Will he be able to do that? Patrick Beverley has become who he is by playing at 100 miles per hour at all times. But if he wants to help the LA Clippers win the biggest games of the year, we need him to be on the floor. Between Pat and Ty Lue, I’m hoping to see his energy focused a bit more, and for him to give up fewer free throws and foul out less next year.
