Marcus Morris Sr. spoke at media availability today. The LA Clippers forward was clear that last season left a bad taste in his mouth.
At today’s availability, LA Clippers Serge Ibaka and Marcus Morris spoke to the media and answered questions. Of particular interest was Marcus Morris, who did not hold back on his thoughts.
Morris fired away immediately, bringing up the 3-1 lead that was blown against the Denver Nuggets, but he didn’t mince words, saying “that team was not better than us.”
While the forward may have a point, it might be for the better that he not vocalize those thoughts. Part of what got the LA Clippers into trouble last season was a rash of overconfidence and a tendency to talk as though the season was already wrapped up.
To be fair to Morris, though, he did also go after that mentality, pointing out that, the way he saw it, the LA Clippers relied too much on the talent they had on paper and didn’t spend the time needed to actually fix the problems facing them.
It was a typical Marcus Morris interview. He didn’t give generic answers and he said what was on his mind, for better or worse. It’s a bit of a breath of fresh air to hear a player acknowledge that the team was resting on its laurels.
Totally unsurprisingly, Mook didn’t hold back either when asked about the departure of Montrezl Harrell and JaMychal Green, saying that “they chose the teams they went to,” before remarking “We’re just gonna have to beat their *** too.”
On a more positive note, Morris noted that he was excited to be able to find his role on the team in this upcoming season, and that he felt like he never felt like he had the chance to do that last season, especially in the bubble, which he repeatedly referred to as “different.”
That said, the number one thing I want to see from this team is them not buying into the noise and just playing their brand of basketball, without needing to constantly talk to the media. There’s no need to give any bulletin board material to the other teams in the league, especially with the way last season ended.
