LA Clippers best point guards in franchise history: 2) Ron Harper

Ron Harper might be getting a lot of attention these days for his time with the Chicago Bulls thanks to The Last Dance documentary, but the five-time NBA champion spent five stellar seasons with the LA Clippers from 1989 to 1994 before teaming up with Michael Jordan.

Harper was traded to the Clippers (along with three future first-round draft picks) by the Cleveland Cavaliers in exchange for Danny Ferry and Reggie Williams on November 15, 1989. The former eighth overall draft pick had established himself as a quality scorer and great defender in his three-plus seasons in the NBA before joining the Clippers via the early season trade.

That promise continued to show in his first season with the Clippers, highlighted by back-to-back 39 point performances in December 1989 in wins against the Denver Nuggets and Indiana Pacers. Although his first season with the Clippers would be cut short due to a series injury to his right knee in January of 1990

In his five seasons with the LA Clippers Harper would average 19.3 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.8 assists, 2.0 steals and .9 blocks per game. He was named a co-captain of the team (along with Danny Manning and Mark Jackson) for the 1992-93 season.

He would leave the Clippers in free agency to sign with the Chicago Bulls before the 1994-95 season. He’d go on to win three titles with the team before signing with the Los Angeles Lakers in October of 1999. He would win back-to-back titles as a member of the Lakers in his final two seasons in the NBA.
