Adam Silver announced the NBA won’t make a decision regarding the continuation of the season until May 1 at the absolute earliest.

Still no good news for LA Clippers’ fans. NBA commissioner Adam Silver told TNT’s Ernie Johnson today that the league will not make a decision regarding the continuation of the season until at least May 1.

Silver said that date is just a placeholder as they don’t know when this virus will peak and at what point the government will give the all-clear for them to resume. “It’s too early to project or predict where we’ll be in a few weeks.”

While it’s not exactly news, we can predict what this would mean for the LA Clippers. They currently sit in the two seed in the Western Conference. If playoffs were to start immediately, this would mean a first-round matchup versus the Dallas Mavericks.

This lack of news doesn’t bode well for the NBA season continuing. At the very least if the league were to resume in mid to late May, we have to assume all or most of the remaining regular season would be canceled. Playoffs in a regular-season typically start late April, so if the league wants to keep next year relatively intact and do get the go-ahead in May, it would make sense that playoffs just start.

Major events around the globe have been delayed or canceled entirely, including a major PGA tournament, The Open, which was scheduled to happen in July in England. While this event is in England, the fact that it has been delayed and the Olympics have been postponed doesn’t exactly make it seem plausible for the NBA to resume play until perhaps late July. If it will take that long for sports to resume, canceling the NBA season entirely seems like the realistic decision despite the losses owners would have to take.
