It looks like the LA Clippers have found their second unit playmaker. According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, the team will sign point guard Reggie Jackson after he completed a buyout with the Detroit Pistons.
The Clippers have been reportedly linked to Jackson for several weeks, especially after Darren Collison opted to stay retired. The Clips have been in need of a playmaker for the second unit and with Patrick Beverley still nursing a groin injury, getting another point guard on the roster sooner rather than later seemed necessary.
Jackson has appeared in just 14 games for the Pistons this season, 12 of which have been over the last month after returning from a back injury. In those games, he has been solid statistically, putting up 14.9 points, 2.9 rebounds, 5.1 assists, and 0.6 steals. He has shot well, connecting on 38.4% of his shots, 37.8% from deep.
As previously stated, the Clippers desperately needed another playmaker given Beverley’s ongoing groin injury. Jackson adds another player capable of knocking down shots but not necessarily needing the ball in his hands. He has a career defensive rating of 109, meaning he’s not the best defender but assuming Bev comes back healthy, the majority of his time will be facing second unit guards. He also has a certain toughness to him, something that will fit well with the team’s established culture.
It’s also a victory in that by signing Jackson, the Clippers keep him away from the Lakers. They had also been looking for another point guard in order to shore up their roster and had been the frontrunners for Darren Collison. They will have to continue to search the remainder of the market for help now.
The timing of this signing works out well. With All-Star Weekend just ending, the team will have a few days off before they resume practice. Jackson will be able to join the team and get a couple of practices under his belt before the Clippers face the Sacramento Kings on Saturday.
