According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, Robert Covington will likely be on the move this week. Do the LA Clippers have a shot at acquiring him?

As the NBA trade deadline of February 6 approaches, more and more rumors have begun to pop up. A lot of them flow through Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN who discussed all trade deadline rumors on his podcast this week. A big rumor of note is that he believes the Minnesota Timberwolves move Robert Covington. Do the LA Clippers have a shot at the forward?

Covington has been a long-desired target by many Western Conference teams, including the Clippers. His 6’7″ frame combined with his defensive capabilities and his ability to shoot the three-ball make him a perfect player to slot in for almost any team. He’s shooting nearly 35% from deep this season on 6.4 attempts per game.

His contract is also extremely favorable. Covington is signed through 2022 making a little over $12 million each of the next two seasons. For what he provides, it’s hard to find a much better contract available on the trade market.

What would it take for the Clippers? As we have discussed in previous posts, a straight-up deal for Maurice Harkless works moneywise. However, there have been rumors circulating that the Timberwolves are not accepting anything less than two first-round picks.

Obviously, with the Paul George trade happening this summer, that is something the Clippers simply cannot do. All they can offer is their first-round pick for this year along with Harkless and possibly some youth like Jerome Robinson or Derrick Walton Jr.

It doesn’t sound likely that the Clips can pull something like this off given the limited assets they have. Covington would be a perfect fit next to George and Kawhi Leonard but that will likely end up just a pipe dream. Instead, the Clippers may make a smaller, less blockbustery type of trade or just stick to the buyout market.
