5 Biggest Clipper Moments of the Decade
By Bo Allen
Number One: Summer of 2019
The most recent offseason is one of the most significant things to happen in the franchise’s history. Since the summer of 2017, the Clippers had been trying to retool on the fly and build a contender without going through a full rebuild. The Clippers began to stash picks and make trade deals, waiting for the right moment to make a big move. This was all while remaining competitive.
The Clippers did stay competitive. They were able to put together solid enough teams for two years to give even the best teams in the league tough runs. In the 2018-2019 season, the Clippers were lacking a star, but they had a team that was tough and played well together. All of the pieces fit perfectly. It looked the whole year like they were preparing to make a big move, and it looked like they were going after the biggest fish in the market. Kawhi Leonard had been playing the best basketball in his life in Toronto, and the Clippers had built a team that he would be a perfect fit for.
On July 6, 2019 it was announced that Kawhi had agreed to sign with the Clippers. Not only that, but the team had acquired Paul George in a trade deal that contained four unprotected picks, one protected pick, two pick swaps, Danilo Gallinari, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. This is what the Clippers had been building for, making moves for, and preparing for. They brought in two absolute superstars and put themselves in a win-now position. Now, all they have to do is execute.
