Three takeaways from the LA Clippers’ win over the Toronto Raptors
Landry Shamet goes down
Late in the third quarter of Monday night’s game, sharpshooter Landry Shamet went down with what has since been called an ankle injury. It looked rather serious at the time, as the second-year guard had to be carried off the floor and back to the locker room, unable to put any weight on his foot.
Shamet missed the remainder of the game, and there’s a chance he could miss extended time as well. According to Yahoo Sports’ Chris Haynes, Shamet will undergo an MRI Tuesday morning to determine the severity of his ankle sprain.
Fortunately, that seems to be all it is — an ankle sprain.
Almost immediately after the play happened, fans began to speculate on Twitter that Shamet’s injury could be more serious, as there didn’t appear to be much contact. The location of the injury was cause for concern as well, and some began to wonder if Shamet had just suffered an Achilles injury.
The 22-year-old guard has had a solid start to his sophomore season, scoring 9.1 points per game on 36.2 percent shooting from three-point range. His percentage from beyond the arc is down, but the early cold stretch is similar to what Shamet went through last year. Through his first 10 games with the Philadelphia 76ers, he was making 38.1 percent of his three-point attempts.
Assuming Shamet does miss the next few games, look for Lou Williams, Rodney McGruder and Jerome Robinson to see some more time on the floor.
The Clippers will miss Shamet’s three-ball and spacing, but with Paul George’s return on the horizon, LA should be able to survive until he’s back and healthy again.
The LA Clippers’ next outing comes tomorrow night when they’ll travel to Houston to take on James Harden, Russell Westbrook and the Rockets.
