Garrett Chorpenning: Landry Shamet

A few names bounced around my head when I first thought about answering this question. My first option was Terance Mann, and then I considered Maurice Harkless. Ultimately, though, I think Landry Shamet is the guy I’m most excited to see ball out for the LA Clippers this season.

I’ve written a lot about Shamet in the past, and I think he’s got plenty of potential to improve going into his second year in the NBA. That isn’t to say that he wasn’t stellar as a rookie, especially during his time with the Clippers, but it’s already looking like he’ll be adding to his game this season.

As a shooter, Shamet is phenomenal. He connected on 45.0 percent of his three-point attempts with the Clippers last year, and even though he had a shaky preseason, he should continue to hover around that number going forward. The gravity of Kawhi Leonard and Paul George should only help that.

Shamet takes about as good of shots as you could hope for — he almost exclusively takes three-pointers and shots at the rim, which are the highest-percentage, highest-value shots in the game.

It’s also worth mentioning Shamet’s defense, which has been mentioned numerous times prior to the start of the regular season. He’s evolving into a versatile asset on that end of the floor, and his ability to defend both guard positions will certainly earn him more time with the starting rotation this year.

More than anything, I think Shamet is this team’s x-factor. If he’s shooting well from deep and keeping the offense clicking, then he could be the player that helps put the Clippers over the top. Otherwise, the Clippers may have to move him to the bench and use bigger lineups to make up for his lack of size.

If I had to put money on it, I would bet that Shamet ends up being one of the most underrated contributors on this LA Clippers team.
