Media Day: Paul George says LA Clippers have league’s best duo
At the LA Clippers’ 2019-2020 Media Day, Paul George claimed that he and Kawhi Leonard are the league’s most talented duo.
The LA Clippers’ Media Day is finally here, which is the first chance for many fans and reporters to get their first look at their team’s new players. It’s also the first chance for those new players to get some hot takes off about the upcoming season and answer the questions that we’ve all been wanting to ask.
One of the most dominant storylines to look out for this season will be all of the superstar duos in the league. There’s simply no shortage — the Los Angeles Lakers have LeBron James and Anthony Davis, the Brooklyn Nets have Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving, the Houston Rockets have Russell Westbrook and James Harden, and the LA Clippers have Paul George and Kawhi Leonard. There are a few others we could list too, but these groups are the ones that many expect to be the best.
You could debate for hours about which one of those groups is the best, but George already has his answer: It’s him and Kawhi.
NBA.com’s Shaun Powell asked George if being elite on both ends of the floor makes him and Kawhi the best duo in the league. Here’s what he had to say:
"“I think so. When you look at two guys that play both ends, two guys that can go and get a basket, two guys that can stop you from getting a basket. Elite on both ends. I don’t see how you can beat that.”"
George certainly has a point. Both he and Leonard are widely considered to be among the 10 best players in the NBA, and Leonard has plenty of stake in the “best in the league” conversation following his title victory in 2019.
The two are some of the best defensive players in basketball as well. Between the two, they have two Defensive Player of the Year awards and nine All-Defensive selections. The fact that they are so versatile will give the Clippers an edge on both ends of the floor, as opposed to the other duos that are more offensively-focused.
It helps that George and Leonard are both gifted on that end of the floor, too. The two combined for 54.6 points per game last season, and each shot at least 37.0 percent from three-point range. It’s a dangerous combination that opposing teams are going to have a very difficult time preparing for.
George and the Clippers will have plenty of chances to defend those statements in the upcoming season. They’ll see the Lakers four times, including on Opening Night, and the Houston Rockets will host them twice.
Whether George and Leonard truly are the league’s best duo will remain to be seen, but with preseason basketball quickly approaching, it won’t be much longer until the LA Clippers will get a chance to make their mark.
