According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, LA Clippers forward Montrezl Harrell has been invited to the Team USA Select Team and join Landry Shamet.

In 2019, Montrezl Harrell and Landry Shamet emerged as rising stars for the LA Clippers. Averaging over 25 points between the two, both players made headlines for their impressive on-court displays. In June, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowksi announced that Shamet would be participating with the Select Team at Team USA’s National Camp. Now, according to The Athletic‘s Shams Charania, Harrell has been invited to join the team as well.

Harrell is certainly deserving — the 25-year-old big made vast improvements to his game over the course of the last season, and he’s already looking primed to do the same in 2020.

However, according to Charania, Harrell is “unlikely to attend”, as there are scheduling conflicts and he is more focused on preparing for the upcoming season with the LA Clippers.

Assuming he decides to go through with his decision and sit out, Harrell will join a long list of players that have turned down invitations/withdrawn from the camp. If he does choose to go, though, he would be joining other young, talented players like Trae Young, De’Aaron Fox and Shamet on the Select Team.

More and more, players have been choosing not to participate with Team USA, and for numerous reasons. Health is certainly something that goes into it — ever since Paul George went down with a gruesome leg injury in 2014, players have seemed to be a tad more cautious. In addition to that, NBA players are some of the busiest people around. That might seem surprising considering it’s the offseason, but staying in top physical shape and hosting camps takes a lot of time and effort, and that doesn’t leave a lot of room for the players to have much personal time.

It’d be hard to blame Harrell for deciding against going — the Clippers have a chance to win the NBA title in 2020, and the whole team needs to begin preparing as soon as possible in order to give themselves the best chance to win. That’s a sentiment that Doc Rivers echoed at Wednesday’s introductory press conference as well.

As of now, Shamet is still expected to participate with the Select Team, and depending on how he performs, he could be added to the official roster for the 2020 World Cup. And considering the amount of players that have already withdrawn from the camp, he may have a decent shot.

Regardless of whether Shamet and Harrell train with the team, it’s noteworthy that the two were invited in the first place.
