LA Clippers Announce Designs For New Arena in 2024
The LA Clippers have unveiled designs for their planned arena, which will be privately funded and will be ready in fall of 2024.
Only a day after introducing Kawhi Leonard and Paul George, the LA Clippers dropped another bombshell. On Thursday evening, the team unveiled designs for their proposed arena in Inglewood, which the team hopes to have open in the fall of 2024.
Not only will this arena be the new home of the team, it will also hold their front office headquarters and a brand new training facility. The arena will also have shops, restaurants and educational facilities. From the team’s reveal:
"The facility’s most striking feature, intended to highlight the temperate climate of Southern California, is the integration of indoor/outdoor “sky gardens.” These landscaped areas for food and beverage will be accessible from every concourse level. The complex also envisions a multi-purpose plaza complete with concert stage, community basketball courts and space for the community to gather and watch everything from Clippers Playoff games to movie premieres on a supersized LED screen."
The team believes this new arena will add jobs, both temporary during construction and long-term once the arena is complete.
If you haven’t checked out the designs, I definitely recommend watching the video in the tweet below and then checking out the team’s site for the full announcement, as well as some frequently asked questions.
The team also announced that the arena will be 100% privately funded. We have to assume the bulk of those funds will come from team owner Steve Ballmer.
This is a big move for the Clippers. The team has had plans for a new arena for several seasons now under Ballmer, but seeing the designs is a big step in the right direction. There have been speed bumps along the way, namely James Dolan, who doesn’t want the arena to interfere with The Forum which he has ownership stakes in.
This seems like more smoke than anything, so expect the arena to be built on time barring any set backs. The completion will just be another big step in Ballmer’s tenure as owner. Aside from improving the team’s on the court product over the years, Ballmer was part of the team’s polarizing re-design and helped in the development of CourtVision, which now is seeing more widespread usage in the NBA.
