Why the LA Clippers should seriously consider signing Jamal Crawford
At 39, Jamal Crawford has carved out an impressive NBA career. But since he has no ring, the LA Clippers should give him a chance to win one.
In the midst of a NBA free agency that seems to be surprising everyone, the LA Clippers won big. Acquisitions of great players, including Kawhi Leonard (the top free agent) and trading for Paul George helped the league to understand why the Clippers have a legitimate shot at the title this coming season. Now, with a roster spot or two left, they should look to Jamal Crawford for some veteran leadership off the bench.
Crawford was there during the Lob City era. He only deserves to be on a title contending team with a fortified bench, such as the Clippers. His role of the bench hasn’t dived down as of recent, although he isn’t getting any younger. He’s still a spark, and with Lou Williams to accompany him, the two sixth men of the year could have some special games.
Crawford played on the Phoenix Suns last season, recording 51 points in the final game of the year. As a solid shooter, handler and a great basketball mind, Crawford makes his case to join any team this season, but I think the Clippers should offer him a veteran deal.
On any given night Crawford has the ability to put up numbers. These numbers are consistent too, he isn’t a fluke. In addition, his leadership and smarts add to any roster, but they would pertain especially well to this Clippers one. Mentoring players like Landry Shamet and playing with intensity is a role he could have and do more than well with the Clippers.
Obviously, Crawford doesn’t offer much outside of scoring, and that doesn’t go along exactly with the Clippers right now. But even as a player just to have for veteran leadership and for his locker room presence, Crawford is worth looking at.
The Clippers need to highly consider a player like Crawford to sign this off-season. He can play the point guard and shooting guard positions and would add a significant boost of the Clippers bench. They’d be indisputably the best bench in basketball and his leadership would only add fear in the eyes of the opponent. I think it’s time for Crawford to come home to Los Angeles and sign with the LA Clippers.
