Does An Andre Iguodala Trade Make Sense For The LA Clippers?
With reports surfacing that the LA Clippers may have interest in trading for Andre Iguodala, we take a look at possible trades and their worth.
After acquiring both Paul George and Kawhi Leonard this past week, the LA Clippers are looking to round out their roster. Some moves have been made, such as the re-signing of JaMychal Green. Still, the front office’s job is never done.
Although there are still free agents to be had, it seems the Clippers have their eyes on someone who is already on a roster: Andre Iguodala.
According to reports, the team may have interest in trading for the former Finals MVP. What would a trade for Iggy look like? Would it be worth it?
First off, let’s remember the Clippers are not as strapped with assets as they were just a week ago. In order to bring in George (and therefore secure Kawhi’s signing), they gave up one of the biggest trade packages in NBA history.
Luckily, Andre Iguodala isn’t that hard to get. A likely trade package from the Clips for him would look something like this:
Adding Iguodala to this Clippers’ roster would be extremely interesting. He bring a championship caliber presence and veteran leadership. The Clips could send wave after wave of defensive specialists at opposing teams between Iggy, George, Leonard and Patrick Beverley. Teams would have nightmares trying to figure out how to score.
To Iggy’s benefit, he would be able to limit his minutes and only play heavily on nights when PG or Kawhi needed to load manage. He could be a part of a competitor yet again and possibly add to his Hall of Fame resume.
It makes sense as a pure basketball fit, but does that make a deal really worth it?
Moving Jerome Robinson would hurt, especially after having just lost Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. The team would be strapped for youth and would be giving away even more assets between Robinson and the second rounders.
That is quite a lot to give up for a player with one year left on his deal and who is about to turn 36 in January. In my opinion, the Clips would be better off waiting and hoping that Iguodala eventually hits the buyout market. If he doesn’t, they can find another player. If he does, they can snag him without losing more valuable pieces.
Yes, getting Iguodala would make the Clippers one of the most frightening defensive teams in recent memory, but losing assets to do so just doesn’t seem worth it in the long run.
