Legacy
After presenting logic and facts about this team’s makeup and what they can offer on the court, it’s time to hit him with a little sentiment. If Kawhi cares any bit about his legacy as a player, what better way to leave a mark then by leading the Clippers to a championship?
That’s no small feat to ask of him. Sure, the pieces are in place. Take the team full of role players who just made the playoffs and took a healthy Warriors team to six games and add a superstar one Leonard’s level. Things may have gone differently.
No, there’s no guarantee the Clippers will have that same special spark going forward. But, with a head coach like Doc Rivers behind him, Kawhi could help invoke it again.
Winning a championship with this franchise would immediately cement him as the greatest player in Clipper history and he would have his third title and (likely) third Finals MVP with just as many teams. No one has accomplished that.
Would this throw him up into the discussion as the G.O.A.T? No, most likely not. But it would jettison him up to a higher tier among the league’s very best of all-time.
Legacy might be a stretch for someone like Kawhi, but having Jerry West talk to him about it seems like the smart move. Who better to tell you about making your mark on the league then the man who himself is the logo for the entire NBA?
The Clippers will have to lay it all out when they meet with Kawhi on July 2. They’ll likely have more than these three presentation points, but these are necessary ones to hit.
