The LA Clippers don’t select until the 2nd round of the 2019 NBA Draft. Who will they take with their two picks? Jontay Porter is a possible candidate.
With just two second round picks in the 2019 NBA Draft, the LA Clippers will be able to take some fliers on players. The second round of the draft does occasionally produce some talent, so making the right selection is key. Today, we will look at Jontay Porter who could fall to the Clippers.
Is the name Porter ringing a bell? It should be. Jontay is the younger brother of Michael Porter Jr. and son of former NBA player Michael Porter. Unfortunately for him, the name isn’t the only thing he shares with his brother.
Porter missed all of last season after tearing his ACL not once, but twice. The second tear was the result of pushing himself too quickly to return. As of now, he still has not been cleared for basketball activities.
I mentioned his brother’s injury history, but something seems to be going on with that family. The eldest Porter, Bri, had to retire from college basketball due to her fifth ACL tear. Their other sister, Cierra, also had to medically retire due to knee injuries.
While this usually would throw up some red flags, for a team like the Clippers who are picking in the second round, it’s not as big of an issue. According to a recent interview with The Ringer, it appears that Porter learned from his mistake. He is taking his time recovering from the second tear, focusing on nutrition. According to the piece, Porter has lost 25 pounds.
This realization shows the type of maturity that NBA teams are looking for.
Talent wise, Porter would be an outstanding selection.
Standing 6’11 with a 7’0 wingspan, Porter could become a prototypical stretch big, something the Clippers have lacked.
Really, the only concern is that darn knee.
