LA Clippers want a duo of Kevin Durant and Kawhi Leonard next season
The LA Clippers are one of the top teams in the race to sign Kawhi Leonard in free agency, but the team is looking to add Kevin Durant as well according to rumors.
There’s a possibility of sunny days in the near future for the LA Clippers. There are many signs suggesting that 2014 Finals MVP, Kawhi Leonard, is considering leaving the Toronto Raptors this summer to sign with LAC. This would be a huge move for the Clippers. It would conclude the post-Lob City rebuild era and mark the beginning of the team’s title chase.
While signing Leonard would make the team perennial playoff contenders, they would need more in order to bring home their first championship.
Sam Amick of The Athletic reports that the Clippers are hoping to not only sign Leonard, but to also sign Kevin Durant in free agency. Leonard paired with Durant would give the team the best forward combination since the Celtics had Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett, and maybe even since the days of Larry Bird and Kevin McHale. Both of those duos won championships, and considering both Durant’s and Leonard’s ability to score at will and lock down even the best offensive players in the game, it wouldn’t be surprising if they did the same.
However this is still just a dream. Is there a chance that Jerry West, Lawrence Frank, and Michael Winger can pull this off? Yes, there is certainly a chance, but it’s still unlikely. The Clippers believe they can pull this off for a few reasons.
First, there’s the front office. Players around the league respect and admire Doc Rivers and West in all that they have done. Also, an enthusiastic and generous owner like Steve Ballmer who is trying to reinvent the Clippers’ image makes for a fun environment for any player.
Second is the money. After the numerous trade deadline deals made by the Clippers, they are primed to have multiple expiring contracts resulting in a ton of money to spend this summer.
Ultimately, it could come down to the supporting cast. Their hot start to the season that resulted to them temporarily being the top team in the West proved that this team of role players can do great things. Add a star or two into that lineup, and they can achieve even better things. Even after the deadline, most of that core of misfits remains on the team, such as Montrezl Harrell, Danilo Gallinari, Patrick Beverley, and Lou Williams. Both Durant and Leonard would fit in great with a crew that can win with them and by themselves.
Again, it’s a long shot that the LA Clippers are able to pull in two superstars in free agency this summer, but in the off chance that it does happen, the Clippers will rise to Western Conference dominance.
