A new LA Clippers jersey has surfaced online, and has been confirmed to be the new City Edition uniform by a few reporters. They’ll officially drop tonight.
After plenty of speculation about what the new LA Clippers ‘City Edition’ uniforms may look like this season, we finally have our first look.
An image of the supposed jerseys was initially shared on Twitter by LA Clippers Film (@LAClippersFilm) and can be seen here. Fans seemed skeptical at first, but discussion between a few Clippers reporters seemed to confirm that these were indeed the real deal.
The jerseys, which are inspired by long-time LA Clippers broadcaster Ralph Lawler, feature a more retro-inspired design that takes subtle pieces of Clippers history and throws them all into one package.
The uniforms in the image look to be a navy blue tone, with red and white hits throughout. Fans have already pointed out that the large ‘LA’ on the front resembles that of the old LA Sports Arena, and the stars on the sides of the jersey are reminiscent of those that appeared on the Clippers’ ABA throwback uniforms from 2012. Those light blue looks were inspired by the Los Angeles Stars:
Furthermore, in the bottom right corner of the new ‘City’ uniforms, Lawler’s signature appears just above a line that reads, “Voice of the LA Clippers”.
Lawler has worked with the Clippers for 40 seasons now, so paying homage to him in this way seems like a great move. Not only do these uniforms recognize him and the work he’s done since the 1978-1979 inaugural San Diego Clippers season, but they tie in bits of Los Angeles history. Essentially, it’s everything the ‘City’ uniform sets out to be in the first place.
The LA Clippers’ official Twitter account posted an image yesterday afternoon that seemed to verify the legitimacy of the leak as well. Both Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Danilo Gallinari are seen in hoodies that feature the same ‘LA’ branding as the supposed uniform.
According to clippersstore.com, the entire City Edition collection will become available tonight at 9:00 PM PST/12:00 AM EST. It’s probably safe to assume that the hoodies seen above, as well as the official uniforms, will be included in this drop.
The team reportedly won’t be wearing the uniforms tonight against the Portland Trail Blazers, though a change is certainly possible. Otherwise, we can expect to see Los Angeles debut its new look on Saturday when they host the Milwaukee Bucks.
