The second of LA’s two players on two-way deals, Johnathan Motley is a lot better than his contract would suggest.

Each time he stepped on the floor during the preseason, Motley looked like an NBA player. He’s got a shooter’s touch, a limitless drive, and most importantly, a will to win. And while others have called him Montrezl Harrell lite, I tend to believe that he’s more of his own thing — and that he may be closer to Harrell’s level than we think.

Sure, the two have similar styles of play, similar strengths, and their hair isn’t that different either. But while Harrell is best under the basket, Motley showed off his range more than anything else in the preseason. He also shows potential as a lob finisher.

Consistently, Motley knocked down shot after shot from the high post, and none of the shots looked lucky. The 23-year-old big went up confidently, shot it confidently, and looked unfazed regardless of whether he made the shot or missed it.

Motley may be entering the season as LA’s most underrated player. After all, he did manage to average 8.7 points and 4.5 rebounds across 16.0 minutes per game in 11 games at the NBA level last season. He isn’t proven just yet, but if those numbers are anything to go off of, Motley may end up having his two-way contract converted before season’s end.
