Expected Role
Offense
Unlike Shai-Gilgeous Alexander, we have yet to see Robinson’s game shine at the NBA level yet. In his sparing preseason appearances Robinson has struggled on the offensive end averaging 5 points per game while shooting a low 25% from the field along with 1.5 assists per game. With the excess of productive guards on the Clippers roster. (Editor’s note: This was written prior to Tuesday’s game against Denver in which Robinson scored 12 points on 40% shooting)
Robinson does however look confident as the primary ball handler in the few instances the Clippers allowed the Boston College guard to initiate the offense. If this continues to be the trend, Robinson could see more opportunities develop to both score and create opportunities for his teammates.
Defense
While Robinson’s offensive game continues to adjust to the NBA level, his defense has drawn praise from head coach Doc Rivers. Rivers mentioned Robinson’s mechanics and drive on the defensive end were impressive especially when his offense left much to be desired during the preseason meeting against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
With guards Patrick Beverley and Avery Bradley helping to mentor the young guard, we can be sure of the guidance Robinson would receive in the future in regards to his defensive capabilities.
