The Clippers traded into the second round of the 2017 NBA Draft to select Jawun Evans 39th overall. He was regarded as a true point guard who could make plays and get to the basket.
As a second-round pick, Evans was not expected to get many minutes last season, but due to the injuries on the roster Evans ended up appearing in 48 games and even starting four. At one point when Teodosic and Beverley were hurt, you could make the case that Evans was the lone point guard in the rotation.
Evans made some nice passes and did a solid job of running the offense. However, he struggled shooting the ball all season long. He ended the season shooting 35.2% from the field and 27.8% from three.
Despite his weaknesses, Evans still found ways to contribute. Many Clipper fans remember him for defending James Harden late in the fourth quarter in a Clipper win over the Rockets.
His season was eventually cut short due to injury, but it was still a promising start for the rookie. Nevertheless, the Clippers have such a deep roster Evans will have to fight for his spot.
He had a poor summer league in which he averaged only six points and shot 28% from the field. That performance combined with his shooting percentages from last season could mean that Evans is on his way out.
