Player Profile: Angel Delgado

After playing in the Summer League and earning a two-way contract with the Clippers, we take a look at Angel Delgado.

Who is Angel Delgado?

Earlier this summer, the LA Clippers signed Angel Delgado to a two-way contract with the Agua Caliente Clippers of Ontario.

Delgado was born in Bajos De Haina, Domincan Republic. He is 23 years old, stands at 6’10 and weighs 245 pounds. So what exactly did the Clippers sign up for?

College Career

Delgado played four years at Seton Hall. He averaged 12.1 points and 11 rebounds. His senior year, he averaged 13.6 points and 11.8 points.  And you might remember his monster 24 point, 23 point game against Kansas in this year’s March Madness.

In Delgado’s last two seasons at Seton Hall, he led the Big East in field goals. Additionally, he led the entire NCAA in rebound his junior year. And although his defense was nothing to marvel at, he did rank 6th in defensive win shares all but his freshman year, if that’s what you’re into.

His game

Delgado is certainly and offensive minded player. He operates comfortably in the paint, with a working arsenal of post moves. He is also able to facilitate and find outlets on the perimeter when need be. He has the game of a traditional center, but might be confined to playing power forward since he is a bit undersized for an NBA center.

One of his best attributes is his rebounding. His best rebounding season was his junior year when he averaged 13.1 boards, 5 of them on the offensive end. In fact, he is the all-time leading rebounder in the Big East.

Delgado shot .539 from the free throw line, which some might see as a liability. However, he has improved his shot each year from .414 his freshman year to .612 his senior year. Steady signs of improvement such as this are worth noting. He recognizes his weakness and works to improve upon it.

In some ways, he is a Blake Griffin-esque player. He has a similar stature and style of play as Blake did during his college days, excluding the other-worldly explosiveness. (While Delgado is a capable dunker, it’s definitely not a main facet of his game.)

• Was awarded the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award, naming him the nation’s best center
• Played for the Dominican Republic in the 2017 FIBA AmeriCup, alongside Karl Anthony Towns
• He was rookie of the year in the Big East for the 2014-15 season
• Won the Haggerty Award for the 2016-17 season as the best player in the New York area

Potential with the Clippers

It’s a bit surprising how a double double machine like Delagdo went undrafted. So, the Clippers might’ve found a hidden gem in him.

If anything, his rebounding prowess shows that he is a hustle player and isn’t afraid to do the dirty work. It is in this way that he’ll fit in well with this young, gritty Clippers team being curated.

With the Clippers summer league team, Delgado averaged 5.6 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 1.4 steals a game.

Recently, the Clippers have had success with two-way players such as CJ Williams and Tyrone Wallace. If Delgado can hone his skills and prove himself valuable in his 45 days with the Clippers, he’ll be hard to pass on for a real NBA contract.
