Ahead of his player option deadline on June 29th, rumors have surfaced that the Clippers’ DeAndre Jordan may opt-in to facilitate a trade.
DeAndre Jordan has until June 29th to decide whether or not he will exercise his $24.1 million player option. According to Marc Stein of the New York Times, Jordan may do so in part to help facilitate a trade.
This has been discussed throughout the summer, as many media outlets expect Jordan to try and not leave money on the table with a free agent market lacking the ability to pay him.
Dallas again?
A trade with Dallas would be interesting, but they don’t have a lot of assets to give back. Only Harrison Barnes and Wesley Matthews come close to matching the salary. Barnes might be a little exciting to get back, but his $24 million contract seemingly eliminates the franchise from free agency next year, which they seemingly want to have cap space for. The Clippers may not have to take money back, should Dallas make sure they have enough cap to bring DJ in though.
Dallas may not pull the trigger either, with both Clint Capela and DeMarcus Cousins entering free agency this summer. The franchise may try to get both of those players instead of moving pieces for DeAndre, especially after he already scorned them once. Stein iterated in a follow-up tweet that a deal with the team is still a long shot.
Other Options
If DeAndre does decide to take the money and request a trade, Washington remains a good partner.
The Wizards are looking to move big man Marcin Gortat and he is sure the trade will happen and with a team in the West. Gortat is an expiring contract, so taking him in a trade would give the Clippers a starting center for the season while still leaving space open for 2019 free agency. They could also hopefully get Kelly Oubre in the trade, who will also be a free agent next summer. Oubre would be the main prize here as he fits the Clippers new timeline.
