Analyzing the value of the Clippers picks: A look back at recent drafts

#12 pick: Luke Kennard

Luke Kennard was the Pistons 2017 selection at pick 12. Kennard showed flashes of a solid prospect his rookie year, but left much to be desired. He struggled consistently on defense and lacks the elite athleticism on the NBA level. Kennard should have a long NBA career as an above-average shooter.

While his rookie season alone is not enough to make a conclusion, the Clippers have to be hoping for a bigger haul with their #12 pick.

#13 pick: Donovan Mitchell

Last but not least, Donovan Mitchell. The Rookie of the Year contender was selected 13th overall by Denver and traded to Utah on draft night. The Louisville standout took the NBA by storm this season and is shaping to be an offensive force. Mitchell led the Jazz much further than anyone gave the team credit for post-Gordon Hayward.

If the Clippers needed a compelling reason to stay put at 13, Donovan Mitchell is it. Late lottery picks can be hit-or-miss, but they can alter the trajectory of a franchise like Mitchell has
