Jevon Carter — 22, PG, West Virginia
If Jevon Carter wasn’t set to turn 23 in September and would instead be turning, say, 19, there’s a real chance that he could be the first point guard taken in this year’s draft.
Arguably the best on-ball defender in the draft, Carter received Defensive Player of the Year Award honors twice from the National Association of Basketball Coaches, and was named the Naismith DPOY last season.
Just 6-1, Carter was able to record averages of 17.3 points, 6.6 assists, 4.6 rebounds, and 3.0 steals per game. During the NBA Draft Combine, he made headlines for playing full court press during one of the scrimmages.
Basically, we’re looking at another Patrick Beverley here — with an improved offensive game. And if the Clippers do end up buying Carter’s rights, imagine the things Beverley could teach him. Imagine pairing these two in the backcourt.
The one downside to Carter’s game is his foul rate. He recorded 3.0 in roughly 35 minutes per game, but with more discipline, that could be avoided.
Carter may be the best bet for the Clippers in the second round. If they’re unable to buy a pick and select him, a trade isn’t out of the question.
