While the Los Angeles Clippers are preparing a trade package, rumors have surfaced that the Spurs may not want to trade Kawhi Leonard.
The San Antonio Spurs and Kawhi Leonard situation has been just plain odd. Neither sides are saying anything, which is leading to teams like the Los Angeles Clippers to prepare trade packages for the star forward.
However, rumors have no surfaced that are contrary to popular belief. After going down 2-0 to the Golden State Warriors on Monday night, Marc Stein reported the team doesn’t seem to want to move him.
"One well-placed insider who has closely monitored this situation told me recently that the Spurs continue to give off signals behind the scenes that they won’t trade Leonard. I’m sure they want Leonard to believe that, but this saga has reached the point that a trade has to be considered no less likely than the prospect of a Pop/Kawhi summit that leads to a detente."
The situation has just become weirder and weirder. With the team not saying anything and coach Gregg Popovich making comments that almost seem directed towards Kawhi, the news that they may not trade him comes as a surprise.
The Clippers reportedly already have a package together for the forward, so they have to just be waiting for the Spurs to make a decision on which direction to go.
Obviously, getting Leonard to join the Clips would be a huge get for the franchise. After moving on from two of their star players in the past year and possibly losing a third this summer, getting a big name franchise player would put them right back on track.
It’s not apparent who or what the Clips would be willing to part with for Kawhi Leonard, but it would likely have to be something substantial. Teams like Boston or Philadelphia have a lot of young assets and picks, so the Spurs will have no trouble getting a good package back.
