DeAndre Jordan involved in rumored trade with Cavaliers
With the Clippers in the middle of yet another injury filled season, they have to consider making a move. Should they send DJ to Cleveland?
Both teams are looking to dump their centers before the trade deadline hits. After signing Blake Griffin to his max $173 million deal, the Clippers do not have much room to add to their depth. DeAndre Jordan is the only player worth trading and getting real value in return, especially since he can walk away in the summer for nothing. While the Cavs have Tristan Thompson, also in the middle of a lengthy deal and he has been injured most of this year.
Jordan is averaging 11.5 points and a career high 15.2 rebounds per game, according to Mike Chiari. On the other hand, Thompson is averaging only 4.9 points and 5.3 boards per game. However he has been one of the Cavs best rebounders alongside Kevin Love. Unfortunately, Thompson has battled injuries all season, missing the first 20 games. So he fits right in with the Clippers.
In order for this trade to happen, LA will need another big or a promising young player in return. However, that is not what this potential trade is relying on. Whether or not this trade happens will depend on if Cleveland is willing to get rid of their first round pick.
Terry Pluto of the Plain dealer confirms Los Angeles interest in a trade package from the Cavs.
"I’ve heard the Clippers would strongly consider [acquiring Tristan Thompson and Channing Frye for DeAndre Jordan] if the Cavs added the Brooklyn 2018 first-round draft pick that they acquired in the Kyrie Irving deal. I’ve heard the Cavs don’t plan to trade that pick."
Another option to consider to pair with Thompson is Jae Crowder. A solid wing defender LA desperately needs, considering he has not established a huge role in Cleveland. Still the first round draft pick along with Thompson and Frye sparks up the most interest for the Clippers.
Having this trade go through would actually benefit both teams. Los Angeles will have successfully dumped their second largest contract, finally opening up some cap space. While Cleveland dumps their injured big who is not producing this year, upgrading to get another all-star. Jordan will help boost the Cavs defense which has been an issue as of late. This trade allows both teams to look forward to the future.
