LA Clippers’ Chris Paul Intends to Meet with Rockets, Spurs and Nuggets
LA Clippers free agent Chris Paul has not been shy about his intentions. CP3 will reportedly take meetings with the Clips, Rockets, Nuggets and Spurs.
Los Angeles Times’ Broderick Turner reported that Chris Paul could meet with several teams besides the LA Clippers: The Houston Rockets, Denver Nuggets and San Antonio Spurs.
As expected Paul will exercise his early termination clause with the Clippers and will become a free agent. LA can offer CP3 more money than any other team. LA Clippers hold this advantage over everyone else.
The two teams in Texas are tempting because of no taxes, but it still is less money guaranteed. For the Spurs, the possibility of playing with stars Kawhi Leonard and Lamarcus Aldridge is intriguing. He would also playing for a legendary coach in Gregg Popovich. Many see CP3 as a great fit.
The Houston Rockets finished third in the Western Conference. Signing Paul would take them to direct contention with the champion Warriors. CP3 playing along with MVP candidate James Harden and for Coach of the Year candidate Mike Dantoni could make the Rockets scary.
The Denver Nuggets seem like an intriguing long-term option as opposed to a “win now” scenario. They have enough pieces, fire power and cap space to immediately contend right after the Warriors and Cavaliers “super-team” era. However CP could be into his late thirties then. Denver does have a connection to the banana boat crew and Dwyane Wade took meetings with the team last summer.
LeBron James has shared on Instagram his adventures with Nuggets president Josh Kroenke. LeBron has already voiced his intentions on teaming up with his basketball pals, including Chris Paul. Could Denver be some sort of gateway for the future team?
Although Denver is a wild card in this Chris Paul free agent sweepstakes, no threat is ignored. LA added Jerry West to the Clippers staff, in hopes to keep stars like Paul and Blake Griffin this summer. Chris Paul is most likely using these teams for leverage when negotiating his concerns with LA, but one thing is certain, and that is surprises happen in free agency.
