Clippers must choose: Doc Rivers the GM or Doc the coach?

Doc Rivers is the Los Angeles Clippers’ head coach and GM, but should he still try and remain in the dual-role with the way he’s disregarding the future?

The NBA trade deadline has come and gone, with the Los Angeles Clippers pulling the trigger on one last deal at the buzzer. Blake Griffin, as promised by Doc Rivers, remained a Clipper, despite speculation of a trade offer with the Denver Nuggets. The real story on the day, though, was the re-routing of Lance Stephenson and a 2019 protected first-round pick to Memphis in exchange for Jeff Green. Whether or not you think Green is an upgrade over Lance or not is speculation at the moment until we see how he integrates himself into the team during the remainder of the season.

We know he has the potential to take a big shot to win a game, (cue the Boston Celtics’ unexpected win over the Miami Heat Big 3 a couple of seasons back), but is he really worth the using up of another Clippers draft pick? A future first-rounder no less.

The Clippers were not the only team to surrender a draft pick over the last week, but when you consider one wasn’t needed for Detroit to poach Tobias Harris away from Orlando, albeit Brandon Jennings and Ersan Ilyasova being good assets in return for the Magic, you can’t help but think the first rounder wasn’t necessary, for what could potentially be a rental.

So, this brings me to the question of whether the Clippers should rethink their strategy with Doc running as both GM and the coach. Over the next few slides, I’ll break down a few of Doc’s deals since he came to the Clippers to survey his track record in the dual role.
