After the Cleveland Cavaliers lost Game 3 to the Golden State Warriors, retired LA Clippers’ player Paul Pierce said that Kevin Durant is the NBA’s best player. Is The Truth telling the truth?

Wait, what?

Moments after the Warriors took a 3-0 series lead last night, former LA Clipper and future Hall-of-Famer Paul Pierce claimed that Kevin Durant is currently the NBA’s best player. He soon followed by saying that the LeBron James era has reached its end.

"“I know you guys don’t wanna hear it, but we’re at the start of the Kevin Durant era and the end of the Lebron era”"

This is an incredibly bold statement from Pierce, as James is averaging a triple double through this point in the NBA Finals. Let’s not forget that James also has 3 championship titles to Durant’s 0.

Pierce reinforced his statement with a tweet late last night, calling his work “Truthjuice”.

Could Pierce be right? Is this really the end of LeBron James’ dominant run?

Logic says no, so that’s what we’re going with, too.

When it comes down to it, numbers show us that James is one of the greatest to ever do it. And just a few weeks ago, people were convinced that he was. But now, down 3-0, suddenly it’s the end of an era? Let us also point out that Durant is 29 years old, and if this really IS the beginning of his era (which sort of already happened, maybe), it certainly won’t last long.

Also, don’t you have to win more than once to have an “era”? When Dirk Nowitzki’s Mavericks beat James in his first year with the Heat, certainly nobody was calling it the “Nowitzki era”. When Pierce’s Celtics beat James en route to his lone championship, nobody called it his era, or Boston’s era for that matter.

Let’s also not forget that Paul Pierce is not a big LeBron fan. The King effectively ended Boston’s big three by beating them en route to his first NBA Final appearance. There’s no love lost between the two.

The Verdict

If anything, this is the beginning (or continuation) of Golden State’s era. With a win in Game 4, they have a chance to become the first team to ever sweep the entire playoffs. Not even MJ’s great Bulls teams achieved that feat. And while Kevin Durant is a big part of this Finals run, there’s no denying that he’s gotten a little help from his friends in doing so.
